The basic directions of the scientific activity

  1. Gamma-spectroscopy of high resolution.
  2. Investigation of electronic structure of the rare earth elements and actinides in chemical compounds, crystals and HTSC materials by the method of chemical shifts of X-ray lines.
  3. Research of the charge radii of nuclei by measuring the isotopic displacements of X-ray lines, determi-nation of the multipole moments of nuclei by measuring hyperfine shifts of the X-ray lines excited in an internal conversion.
  4. Study of fundamental characteristics of the neutron in dynamic diffraction by crystals without a centre of symmetry.
  5. Determination of the hadron masses and studying the hadron nuclear interaction by precise measure-ments of the hadronic atoms spectra.
  6. Study of the channelling of elementary particles in the bent single crystals.

Originally all the researches were carried out in Sumbaev's laboratory called "Sector of gamma-spectroscopy" under direction of O.I.Sumbaev. Later Sector has been divided and has given a birth to several new scientific laboratories and groups with their own themes in both Neutron Research Department (NRD) and High Energy Physics Department (HEPD) of PNPI.

Now they are:

  1. Laboratory of X and g-ray spectroscopy (Head V.V.Fedorov, NRD)
  2. Laboratory of chemistry and spectroscopy of materials (Head Yu.S.Grushko, NRD)
  3. Laboratory of relativistic nuclear physics (Head V.M.Samsonov, HEPD)
  4. Group of mesonic atoms (Head Yu.M.Ivanov, HEPD)
  5. Group of pionic atoms (Head A.F.Mezentsev, HEPD)
